There’s nothing like a good ol’ fashioned prison riot. That’s unless you have a fear of prisons and/or riots. If either is true, then this attraction is not for you.
LOCKDOWN is the newest interactive addition to the family of attractions at Indy Scream Park in Anderson, Indiana. I know what you are thinking, “the place with Lemon Drop and the Casino?”. The one and only.
THEME:
LOCKDOWN is a simple idea, a prison. A prison that is old, a prison that is old and full of unsavory people. The imagery jumps out in your mind as we have been trained by movies and TV what an old prison should look like. LOCKDOWN delivers on the preconceived notions of a prison. At times, if you can separate your mind from the background noise of people screaming, you can feel like you are in a real prison. For that I commend the team’s ability to execute on the theme.
But let's get some back story to better understand the intent of this attraction. LOCKDOWN is set back in the 50s(?) and the idea is that a massive storm knocked out the power to the prison. This released the prisoners and a riot broke out. This riot left the guards outnumbered. Now with most of the guards being dead; These silly prisoners devised a plan that would keep a roof over their heads. They decided to stay and make the prison their new home.
The attraction is elaborate. The prison doors actually slide open and close. There appears to be a second floor in some areas, which is unusual in most attractions. There are prisoners (important to have when running a prison). You walk from room to room and experience the main themes of a prison. There are the cell blocks, the execution room, boiler room and door control (not sure if that’s what it is called, but you get the idea). The spaces are fully decked out top to bottom with props, distressing and lighting. The walls feel like actual concrete and have been aged to fit the timeline. As mentioned before, the doors being able to open in close is a nice touch because you never quite know where the next scare will come from. You feel safe when the doors are closed. Then, suddenly, they open and that safety feeling jumps away. And, well, you also physically jump away.
SCARES:
There are some really fun interactive scares in the attraction. You get to dance with a prisoner, which is a fun experience. Not a scary interaction - but memorable. There are body bags that you get zipped up in. There is something about being put into something that dead people go into that just gives you the heebie-jeebies. Like Grandma’s basement… always creepy. You get placed into boilers and “burned alive”, locked into a cell with a hungry prisoner. There's nothing too tech heavy if that’s what you are into. I say that, but the execution scare does require some decent programming and mechanics, it just does not punch as much as it could. Overall, the scares are by the book. It's like watching Pocahontis and Avatar. You’ll watch both, but let’s be honest, they are the same movie.
SOUND:
Sound quality is good. And by quality, I mean the tonal emanation - not the soundtrack itself. We’ll get to that. The quality of the sound is thorough. There’ss bass tone, mids, and highs. The quality of the sound system is evident because of how clearly you can hear the different notes from the soundtrack. I (personally) always enjoy a good sound system. The soundtrack is composed of various “prison” sounds. Metal clanks, air raid style alarms, sounds of pain and torture. Fitting sounds in the right areas of the attraction really adds to the experience, and that definitely happens in this attraction.
LIGHTING:
Their use of a darker blue throughout gives a sense of night time and moonlight but also a colder feeling that plays well with the concrete walls. The selective times they deviate from the blue (like in the boiler room) they use the appropriate colors, such as red and orange to assist with the sensation of heat or rust. There are some more practical lighting elements that add to the theme light flickering fluorescents and caged lights as well.
CONCLUSION:
As rundown prisons go this is one of the better ones. It's hard to beat those attractions that are actually in a rundown prison (Terror Behind the Walls comes to mind). With some scares that set it apart from the other attractions, LOCKDOWN gives as good of a time as can be had inside an old rundown prison.
